The Purpose of the White Belt
The belt system has been a mainstay of many traditional martial arts styles, including Karate, for a long time. These belts and their various colors, such as white, serve a functional, symbolic, motivational, and even organizational purpose, like identifying one’s rank. Some of the chief purposes of the martial arts white belt are:
- Functional: All belts are important to keep traditional martial arts uniforms, such as the Gi, securely in place. On top of that, the belt is often used in grip and hold training in many styles.
- Symbolic: The white Karate belt signifies a new beginning in the journey of martial arts. It symbolizes purity and the potential for growth.
- Rank: Perhaps most notably, belts signify rank and experience. The white belt identifies one as a beginner, which helps instructors and other practitioners understand your level.
Though all of our belts are made with extremely durable material, you will want to take proper care of your martial arts white belt, both to better ensure its longevity and out of respect for the martial arts tradition of your choosing:
- Wash Properly: Make sure to use gentle wash settings and cold water when washing your belt to protect the fabric.
- Drying: It is always best to air dry your belt by laying it flat or hanging it in a ventilated area. If using a dryer, do not use high heat settings, which can damage the fabric.
- Maintenance: For long-term maintenance, keep your belt in a dry place and make sure to store it lying flat or rolled up to avoid creasing.
Right now, our white belts come in 8 different sizes. It should be kept in mind, however, that Karate belts tend to be long, and the leftover space after fastening them is allowed to vary. So, you should have no trouble finding a size that works for you!
