Do martial arts mouthguards actually provide that much protection?

Mouthguards have a proven track record of protecting the teeth, gums, lips, and tongue from damage in sparring, combat, or training situations. It is all too easy for one to suffer dental damage that can be extremely costly to fix. On top of that, fighting mouthguards also serve to protect one’s opponent’s body from being damaged by teeth, too!

Are Karate and Taekwondo mouthguards required?

Most traditional martial arts and even more contemporary martial arts styles require a mouthguard today, especially if any kind of sparring or intense combat training is involved. Many schools will not let anyone partake without proper protective equipment, such as a sparring mouthguard, due to the heightened risk of injury and for legal protection.

Do I need to wear a mouthguard all the time while training?

While it is advised to always wear a martial arts mouthguard while sparring or engaging in combat activity – and most schools will enforce fighting mouthguard use – it is not common to use a mouthguard during warmups, conditioning, or form practice, all of which is common for traditional martial arts styles such as Karate or Taekwondo.

Why are mouthguards only for the top teeth?

First, it’s important to note that some degree of comfort and ease of breathing is necessary for sparring – a top and bottom mouthguard can make this more difficult. Though a bottom mouthguard can add extra protection, most schools just require a top mouthguard as they are the teeth more likely to be damaged.
